Pair of runner-up finishes in Sunshine Nationals prelims, Mother Nature wins finale

Cory Hedgecock made the trek to Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.) on Thursday afternoon to compete in the fourth annual Sunshine Nationals.

With a stout field of 67 604 Crate Late Models amassed for the event co-sanctioned by the Crate Racin’ USA Winter Shootout Series and the DIRTcar Pro Late Models, Hedgecock’s qualifying effort placed him on the front row for his preliminary feature. Losing one spot in the final 10 circuits after pacing the field in the first half of the race, Cory notched a second-place finish, which came behind Kyle Bronson.

For another round of preliminary features on Friday, Cory timed in sixth-fastest in his group, which positioned him on the second row for his $1,500-to-win prelim. Inching forward one position in the 20-lap affair, Hedgecock chased Randy Weaver to the checkers with Demetrios Drellos rounding out the podium.

An unfavorable forecast for Saturday’s program forced officials to cancel the Sunshine Nationals finale.
